How Solana launchpads work

Mints, bonding curves, and graduation: the mechanics behind the platforms where most meme coins are born.

Most meme coins today are not launched by teams with market makers. They are minted in seconds on launchpad platforms, and understanding the mechanics explains a lot of the price behavior that follows.

The mint

Creating a token on a launchpad takes a name, a ticker, an image, and a tiny fee. There is no code to write and no liquidity to provide up front. This is why thousands of tokens appear every day: the cost of trying is near zero, and the payoff for the rare winner is enormous. The volume of launches is noise by design; almost everything minted will never trade meaningfully.

The bonding curve

Instead of a traditional order book, most launchpads start tokens on a bonding curve: a formula where each purchase mints tokens at a slightly higher price and each sale burns them at a slightly lower one. Early buyers get mechanically better prices, and the curve guarantees there is always a price, no matter how small the market.

The important property for a trader: on a curve, price is a direct function of net buying. There is no hidden liquidity and no spoofed depth. Watching net inflow on a curve is watching the actual state of demand.

Graduation

When a curve token reaches a threshold of collected liquidity, it “graduates”: the platform seeds a real liquidity pool on a decentralized exchange and trading moves there. Graduation is a meaningful signal for two reasons. First, it filters: the vast majority of mints never get there. Second, it changes the market structure overnight, from a formula to an order book, where whales, snipers, and market dynamics behave differently.

What this means for tracking

The launchpad pipeline gives you a clean funnel to watch: thousands of mints, a fraction with real holder growth, a smaller fraction that graduate, and a handful that ignite. Each stage has observable, public, on-chain markers. The skill, whether human or automated, is connecting those markers with what the crowd is saying before the crowd finishes saying it.

Nothing here is investment advice. Launchpad tokens are among the riskiest assets that exist.
